This CLE will provide concrete guidance about how to draft a strong settlement agreement that accomplishes your clients’ goals. Furthermore, the webinar will examine North Carolina court decisions that illustrate potential settlement agreement pitfalls. In doing so, this CLE equips participants with the skills they need to avoid mistakes and draft a solid—and binding—settlement agreement. ­­

The first hour of this CLE will review North Carolina court decisions where settlement agreements went wrong. After overviewing common errors, the second hour will provide practical guidance for avoiding these mistakes. Participants will learn how to negotiate and draft effective settlement agreements that get the job done!

9:00am – 10:00am – What Could Possibly Go Wrong? with Murphy Horne Fletcher

The first hour of this CLE will provide practical guidance for negotiating and drafting settlement agreements. We will review common settlement agreement provisions and provide tips to ensure your agreement accomplishes your client’s goals.

Presenter:

Murphy Horne Fletcher is an Asheville based attorney who focuses on helping businesses navigate state and federal regulatory issues in the areas of employment and tax. Murphy advises employers on human resources issues; drafts employment policies and agreements; represents businesses before government agencies and in state and federal court; and assists in the preparation and administration of employee benefit programs. In addition to human resources issues, Murphy helps employers navigate state and federal tax issues, including representing businesses before the Internal Revenue Service and the North Carolina Department of Revenue. She also assists employers with developing and maintaining employee benefit plans that are compliant with federal and state law.

In the second hour, we will review North Carolina court decisions where settlement agreements went wrong to help attorneys avoid the same mistakes.

Presenter:

Nishma Patel is an Asheville based attorney whose practice focuses on civil litigation disputes in state and federal court. Prior to joining McGuire Wood & Bissette, Nishma served as a felony prosecutor and tried hundreds of cases to verdict. As an experienced trial attorney, Nishma provides responsive, practical advice and assists clients in resolving their disputes through negotiation, mediation, and litigation. In addition to her courtroom advocacy, Nishma helps clients navigate the complex federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting their businesses. Prior to becoming an attorney, Nishma spent seven years with a pharmaceutical company helping to maintain their intellectual property and ensure audit compliance.
